WALT: Review the reading strategies we have been learning this term.
In Room 2 our hotspot is all about reviewing the stuff we did this year.
We had to make a animation about the Nativity Scene.
Have you ever made something like this?

WALT: Read a monologue
In Room 2 for our R.E we have been learning about the virtue Patience.
Today we had to read a monologue. It was a bit challenging because I had to read it by myself.
The monologue we had to read was about what Patience is.
WALT: Understand Gods Covenants
For RE in Room 2 we have been learning about Gods agreements - Covenants. Covenants are big agreements that God made with people living on Earth. For example, God made a Covenant with Noah because once he sent the big flood, he said ¨I won´t send anymore floods.¨
WALT: Create Symmetrical Art
In Maths in Room 2 we have been learning about Geometry, particularly symmetry. We have made Symmetry Sculptures, and today we have made symmetry art. We got 2 different pieces of coloured card paper, and we folded one in half, made a design, and then picked what side was better.
We cut the folded line and then cut figure out. We put the figure on one side, and put the leftover paper on the other.
Have you ever made a design like this?
WALT: Make a sculpture that is symmetrical!
In Room 2 we are learning about symmetry for Maths. Today, Miss Pownall gave us around 9 pieces of paper, then we arranged all the paper together. Miss Pownall stapled them together! It was our job to fold it and make it symmetrical!
Have you ever done something like this?
Here it is:
WALT: Understand the virtue of serving
In Room 2 our virtue for these 2 weeks is Serving, We had to get into buddies and make a comic strip on John 13 1 - 17. This bible story was about the Washing Of The Feet. Me and Alex made this comic.
Have you ever made a comic before? (Zoom in to see the picture better)
WALT: Understand the life of a saint
In Room 2 we have been learning about All Souls Day and how people become saints. After learning more about the saints, we got to get into buddies and make a slide about ONE saint. Me and Londyn were paired up together, and it took around 3 R.E sessions to complete. We chose St Francis of Assisi.
Did you know St Francis of Assisi's Feast day is on October the 4th?
Here is the slide!
WALT: Know who is part of the Communion of Saints
In Room 2 our R.E task was to make a Google Drawing of The Communion of Saints. There is 3 sections of the group.
WALT: Follow the Technology Design Process (TDP)
In Room 2 for our Inquiry we are following the TDP because we are going to make Christmas decorations. Our client was Ms Rooney and she asked for Catholic Christmas Decorations and the first thing we had to do was to make a brainstorm about what we would do!
WALT: Write an explanation
In Room 2 these past 2 weeks we have been focusing on environmental problems and how the world is reacting to it. One of our task was to write and explanation about an environmental problem, and I chose Wildfires, since it is 2 problems in 1 because it also harms the problem: Deforestation. Wildfires burn down our forests and animals homes, so its a big threat to our Earth! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Here is the writing piece:
Did you know that if we don't try to help the effect of Wildfires on our Earth, 8,000 Wildfires could happen in the next year? Wildfires are a much bigger threat to the earth than you think, because at the end of this year, there will have been around 4,000 - 5,000 Wildfires. That's crazy! How big is this issue? How can we fix it?
If you are in a country where it’s very sunny, like Australia, there is a much higher chance of a Wildfire happening. Australia is also known for their Wildfires, and the amount of fires that are occurring is just going to get larger if we don’t try and find solutions.
The Wildfires are the sun. The second they touch something, there is no escape for it. Wildfires are just like a house fire. Wildfires travel fast and aren't a help for the Earth, because all the smoke rises to the air, and pollutes it. Wildfires are also another reason why birds are going extinct. The air makes it hard to breathe and their homes are all burned to ashes.
The main reason why these wild raging Wildfires are appearing are because of cigarette butts. People who smoke carelessly throw them into a bush, or in a forest. The cigarette butt could still be on fire, or very hot and that starts a fire. Lots of people, and animals, especially Koalas. Now all of you are probably not aware of how many Koalas are actually damaged. Around 60,000 are hurt or pass away from Wildfires. Koalas live in the forest and when a Wildfire occurs, it ruins their homes and damages them. Lots of Koalas get terribly affected, and it's so unfair. 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
So, How can we try to stop this madness? Some solutions we could use to narrow down the amount of fires are: Keep your vehicles off dry grass, and make sure your campfire is ice cold before leaving, or going to sleep or when you wake up, there might be a huge Wildfire! Usually fires happen in unpopulated areas, or they can happen naturally by the heat of sunlight, or a lighting strike, because all a Wildfire needs to occur is just fuel, oxygen and heat. Some days in certain countries the chance of a Wildfire could go straight up from 40% to 70%!!
A huge reason why we need to stop Wildfires is because lots of people and species are affected by it. Wildfires are linked with deforestation, so a Wildfire is basically 2 problems in 1, since they destroy forest’s and lots of animals' homes, including birds and other animals who use forest’s as a place they can use to live, get teared down to ruins. Stopping Wildfires is a must. If we do somehow make a huge effect on Wildfires. That number of 5,000 could go down to around 500 - 1,000!
In conclusion, the faster we try to stop these the better the Earth would be much healthier because there isn’t so much pollution going around. Australia is suffering a huge drought with all their fires. If we help we will help the firefighters from doing so much work and it will help all the people who suffer from these terrible fires. 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
WALT: Practice our maths knowledge
In Room 2 our teacher has told us to finish our Maths Work for Week 1 and Week 2. Once we had finished the Math Slide we picked one of the slides that we did and share it to our blog explaining the strategy we used to complete it.
WALT: Use our imagination!
In Room 1 and Room 2 we have been doing writing, and for our writing we had to use a picture of a duck and put him anywhere! Dakota in our class had originally made the duck and it represents our school! We call him "NBC Quacker" We had to use our imagination, and I think its very funny, my classmates did too!
(Credits to Dakota for the Duck Picture)
My duck is right now is at a Press Conference, and her name is Jacinda Quackdern and is making a very important announcement to her fellow ducklings. We better not disturb her! It looks "very" important. She is talking about how ducks will rule the world!? Oh no.. I will never watch the news anymore!
I have just heard very important new from HUMANS! The ducks are right now taking over all the hot-dog stands.. OH NO! Now there is a Quack Kong? He is taking over the skyscraper! NOOOOO! Wait.. I see something outside...
WALT: Solve problems and solutions
WALT: Reflect on our experience
Today, at NBC we were lucky enough to have some Kadoo African drummers come to our school to teach us a special song from their country and let people have some turns on the drums! They also taught us some dances. I got to have a turn on one of the drums and it was so amazing, I was so excited and very grateful that I got picked!
They are from West Africa, which to be honest, is a long way for Christchurch! A fun fact about West Africa, the 14th-century king was the richest person in all history of Celebrity Net Worth site! (That's a lot of money!)
The atmosphere was very happy, joyful and full of sound! The people on the drums were amazing because they kept all the rythm on the same track.
Their songs were very unique and we were very lucky to be taught them! My favourite part was probably having a turn on the drums and being able to be doing some cool dances!
Here are some photos of some students having a turn on the drums! 👀
WALT: Reflect on our Waste and how we use it.
On Friday the 21st of October Room 2 went to the Bromely Dump. We went there because our virtue for these 2 weeks is Stewardship and taking care of the environment. 3 parents came to help us: Shelly, Sarah and Jackie. Our first activity was learning everything a proper compost needs
WALT: The world is speaking to us
In Room 2 we have been talking about problems in our Environment, and Pope Benedict's quote, "The World is talking to us. Me and Dakota made a google drawing about 2 Environmental problems and what the world would be saying about it.
WALT: Identify prior knowledge
We are learning about all the problem in our world, e.g: Wildfires and pollution. We are also learning about why it is happening, e.g: Deforestation is happening because we are cutting down tree's and lots of problems could happen if we don' stop soon.
We made a KWL {What I Know, What I think I know, and What I want to learn}
WALT: Understand the Beatitudes
For our R.E we are learning about the Beatitudes. We had to rewrite them in our own words. I did it with Dakota and it helped me and Dakota understand them.
WALT: Understand Music Notes
Today I made a video showing you the NZSL hand signs for Do, Re, Mi, Fa, So,l, La, Ti, Do
Watch the video and follow along. We have been learning how to read Music Notes and this is why I am doing it.
WALT: Say the days of the week
In Room 2 we have been learning about our 2nd language, Māori. It is Māori week this week and one of out activities on our Māori slides were to find out the days of the week in Māori and how to pronounce them properly. A way that helps me pronounce the Māori days of the week properly is to listen to the last 2 letters of the Māori days of the week. They are all different.
Monday = Rāhina - Pronunciation Rā - Hi - Na
Tuesday = Rātu - Pronunciation Rā - Tu
Wednesday = Rāapa - Pronunciation Rāa - Pa.
Thursday = Rāpare - Pronunciation Rā - pa - re
Friday = Rāmare - Pronunciation Rā - ma - ere
Saturday = Rāhoroi - Pronunciation Rā - ho - roi
Sunday = Rātapu - Pronunciation Rā - ta - pu
WALT: Understand by identifying events from the plot.
This week we have been learning about Graphic Novels for our reading. Something inspired me to do this. The thing that inspired me was the saying "All hero's don't wear capes" It really is true because there are a lot of people who don't wear capes and are hero's. e.g The Medical Team. I found this really fun and interesting to do because we don't usually make comic's.
Sourced from Me Have you ever seen a real Giraffe before? |
For reading we had to choose to either make a advertising poster for Orana Park or your own Zoo. I made my own Zoo and I really hope you like the poster.
WALT: write our letters the correct size
For writing this was a little bit weird but we had to write part of a song in our books. It was really fun and it took some time to write it down.
WALT: use onomatopoeia in our writing
Today for writing we had to do a 15 minute quick write with at least 3 examples of onomatopoeia. I put on a 15 minute timer and started writing! It was really fun and I enjoyed it.
¨Help!¨ Screamed Keisha. She had fallen down a hole! No one could hear her and she was starting to cry… Until she heard a loud BANG! She knew that she had to get out and fast. She looked around and then saw.. A rope with a hook attached to it! She threw it up to the top of the hole and made sure the hook was dug down deep into the sand. Then she tried to climb up the hole but landed on her back with a loud THUD! She felt helpless as she heard another BANG! What would she do now…
She decided to rethink everything and retrace her steps. Aha! She thought of something. She did not just find the rope… It was chucked down to her! So she decided to say something to test it. ¨I'm hungry!¨And as soon as she said that someone handed her an apple.. But she grabbed the hand and pulled herself up.
CRUNCH, CRUNCH, CRUNCH went the stick as Keisha and Henry walked on top of them. ¨Oh and I forgot to introduce myself, I´m Henry¨ As soon as he said that Keisha´s heart stopped….
…...TO BE CONTINUED…….
W.A.L.T: Art takes many forms
Today for our school work the first thing there was art. We had to take a picture of art and explain why it was art. I took a picture of my tree. My tree is a plum tree and at Spring it grows blossoms and in Summer is grows plums. (Click on the image to see the whole thing)
I had to work through the slides and then make a google form asking a question. I did would you rather.
This was really fun to do.
W.A.L.T: Write a PTH blog comment
Here is my blog comment I did on Lily´s blog. It was a comment on her R.E slide.
W.A.L.T: Write a letter
Today for my school work I choose to do writing. Miss Pownall arranged us to write a letter to Life Education \ Harold. I asked 3 questions and talked about our zoom calls. It was actually pretty hard to think of questions to ask him, but it was really fun.
Ki Oara Harold!
W.A.L.T: Be Reliable
In Rom 2 our teacher has put up some work to be done during this lockdown. I choose to do R.E because I thought it would be fun and reflect what we did when we were at school. We had this google drawing to fill out and there was pictures of something.
e.g: The chromebook charging station.
You had to write down what it was used for and what happened if you did not do what it was used for.
e.g: The charging station is where you charge your school chromebooks. If you do not charge your school chromebook you have to do your work in your book.
Because we are in Lockdown and have to do online Zoom Meetings our teacher, Miss Pownall has arranged some work we have to do at home. I choose writing and for writing we had to to a positive, thoughtful, and helpful comment. I choose to do my comment on Quinn´s Blog. He was talking about what he was doing at home. Here is my comment.
In Room 2 we have been learning about language. We have been separated into 2 groups. My group had to blog post a Maori dictionary that we filled out. Here is mine.
W.A.L.T: Reflect on exciting experiences 🎉
Emma Twigg, famous Gold Medal Olympian, came to our school on Tuesday, 17th of August. The Kapahaka group preformed an amazing Haka to Twigg and then we sang the National Anthem. Soon after that Twigg came up onto the stage and talked about her failures and her success. It was very interesting and great to learn why she started. She also talked about how she participated at 2 Olympic Games and came 4th in each of the races. Twigg explained how she came . 3 of a second away from winning a medal and how she left the sport for 2 years.
After those 2 years Twigg decided she would come back. She knew she could stand in the middle of the podium and claim a Gold Medal. After 3 years of training she got the Gold Medal and stood in the middle of the podium like she knew she could. She said, if you have a dream go for it because you will always achieve it!
In Room 2 we have been working on our Olympic slides for reading and the last task was to read a book called "Chicken Olympics" One of the characters was called Aunty Fluff. We had to make a profile for her like she was in the real Olympics. I had a lot of fun making this.
Here is mine! 🐔🐔🐔🐔🐔🐔🐔🐔🐔🐔🐔W.A.L.T: Reflect on our experiences
At NBC we have been lucky enough for 2 people to put on an amazing show for us. It was called The Boy With Wings and it was about a little boy called Jack and one night he had a dream about his great grandmother saying "Look for the boy with wings and you will find your treasure"
. Jack went on lots of adventures such as following a goat in thick, thick fog and battling a sand storm and finally found out that under the rock in the middle of the meadow where the dying apple trees were, was water. Jack let the water flow and soon enough the trees were fresh and was growing apples once again.
It was an amazing show and I would watch it again.
Have you ever read The Boy With Wings?
While we were doing our Olympic slides one of the activities I found was making a DLO (digital learning object) about why all children should be involved in sports. I spent a lot of time into this.
🏈🏉🏈🏉🏈🏉🎾🎾🏓🏓🎾🎾🏓🏓🎾🎾🏀🏀🏀🏀🏀🏀🏀🏀🏀🎽🎽🎽🎽🎽🎽🎽
We have been learning about the Olympics and Emma Twigg this term and we had to make an article about her. Here is mine.
Emma Twigg won the finals and brought home gold at the Tokyo Olympics on Friday at 12:30. She did not expect to win this time.
You could see the pain in her face while she was rowing as hard as she could to get to the end. No matter how hard people tried to catch up to her she went even faster. A fish even jumped out of the water to see Twigg claim the victory. She was very happy and nearly cried. "For anyone who's had a little bit of failure… just keep at it. If you believe you can do something and you know your worth, then the world's your oyster.”
Twigg began rowing a long time ago in 2001. After 2 years of rowing boat class she began Woman Single Sculls. She won gold in 2005 in the World Rowing Junior Championship. Then aged 29, Twigg left the sport, and it seemed the 2014 world champion and five-time medallist at world champs would depart without making the podium at an Olympics.
W.A.L.T: Make connections to texts.
In Room 2 we have been learning about the Olympics. One of our tasks on our slides was to make a red hat about how I feel about sports. Here is mine.
I also think that sports is really cool.
W.A.L.T: Connections to texts.
In Room 1 and 2 we have been focusing on the 2020 Olympics. As a class we watched the Swimming and Rugby Sevenths. We have a special connection to the athlete Emma Twigg because she is Rico's auntie. Today we had to find facts about the Olympics and put it in a google drawing
W.A.L.T: Understand Matariki.
In Room 2 we have been learning about Matariki and how it came together. We watched a video about the Sky Father Ranginui and Earth-mother Papatuanuku. It showed us how Matariki happened and what they did to separate them. I made a google slide about them!
Have you ever seen Matariki?
W.A.L.T: Understand where Syria is.
In Room 2 we have been learning about refugees and Syria. We had to find a year 6 and make a google draw about where Syria is, find Syria on google maps and put a star on Damascus and Homs. Then we had to write a list about places near Syria.
W.A.L.T: Understanding the meaning of Forgiveness
The year 5 children have been learning about the meaning of forgiveness. We had to look at a bible to find versus to put into the squares.
